Official Selection of Films for the 70th Anniversary of Cannes Film Festival

The 70th Anniversary of the annual Cannes Film Festival starts from Wednesday, May 17 to Sunday, 28  with French director Arnaud Desplechin's "Ismael's Ghosts" as the opening film.

Spanish filmmaker, Pedro Almodóvar is the President of the Jury and Italian actress Monica Bellucci is hosting the opening and closing ceremonies.

Famous Italian Tunisian actress and feminist, Claudia Cardinale is on the official poster , dancing on a Roman rooftop in a 1959 film. The poster “promises a celebration in passionate red and sparkling gold.”

I am not really excited about the whole celebration, because not a single African film is among the 19 films in the main competition for the highly coveted Palme d’Or that will be encrusted with 167 diamonds.
Only the French Tunisian drama, "Beauty and the Dogs" by Kaouther Ben Hania is competing among the 18 films in the Un Certain Regard.
"Babatu", a 1976 Nigerien film directed by the late Jean Rouch, one of the founders of cinéma-vérité in France is selected among the films for special screenings of Cannes Classics.

The Palme d'Or.
Sofia Coppola's "The Beguiled", adapted from the 1966 Thomas Cullinan novel is a hot contender for the Palme d'Or.
