Stop Promoting Mediocrity in Nollywood
STOP PROMOTING MEDIOCRITY IN NOLLYWOOD
The ingenuity of videographers in Nigeria produced the phenomenon of #Nollywood that was defined by guerrilla filmmaking with no budget or low budget. These cheap videos built the first and largest indie film industry in Africa.
You don't have to break the bank to make a hit movie that will make you smile to the bank. The phenomenal paranormal horror film, "The Blair Witch Project" shot 20 years ago in 1999 was made with only US$60,000, but grossed about US$249 million worldwide.
What matters most in filmmaking is not the size of your camera, but the size of your imagination.
Nollywood has become the global name of the Nigerian film industry, in spite of the criticisms of the poor technical skills of the guerrilla filmmakers since the 1990s.
Many of the filmmakers have learned from the mistakes of the past and improved the standards of their movies over the years. We have seen world class photography and cinematography in recent movies with commendable appearances at notable international film festivals. But we cannot deny that mediocrity is still prevalent in Nollywood with the consent of both the filmmakers and film distributors.
The problems of bad sound are still recurring in majority of the movies, because of the professional incompetence and ignorance of many of the filmmakers who have failed to GET THE SOUND RIGHT. They lack the expertise in sound for filmmaking and have refused to learn the use of the unique language of sound in filmmaking.
But they go about posing and posturing as good filmmakers and some of them even claim to be experts when their substandard movies have failed to qualify for accredited international film festivals.
The only way to end mediocrity in the Nigerian film industry is to reject their shortcomings in filmmaking and rejecting their substandard movies.
