It is important to publish a screenplay of the Nollywood genre for the pleasure of reading it and for film studies.
When I was researching for the production of a film on the beauty of the Niger Delta in the midst of the turmoil of horrifying conflicts in the region, I spent two years studying the sociocultural characteristics of the people on Bonny Island during the recce and I completed the story. Then I invited, Chika Christian Onu, one of the most accomplished leading pioneers of the phenomenon of Nollywood since he directed the second part of Living in Bondage, the first Nollywood blockbuster movie produced in 1992 and 1993. His colleague at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Lagos, Chris Obi-Rapu directed the first part of the two-part drama thriller written by Kenneth Nnebue and Okechukwu Ogunjiofor and produced by Okechukwu Ogunjiofor. Chika directed "Glamour Girls" in 1994, the second Nollywood blockbuster movie for the same Kenneth Nnebue. "Glamour Girls" is documented as the first English language movie in Nollywood.
Chika joined me as a cowriter of the screenplay for "Naked Beauty" which I published in 2006, because of the high literary value as an accomplished work of Nigerian literature in the format of a screenplay. But the production of the film has been delayed by circumstances beyond my control and I did not want to follow the guerrilla filmmaking style of typical Nollywood movies. I want the best global standards, because I want the film to be a masterpiece that will break new grounds for Nollywood in competition with the best films in the world. It must be good enough for the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival and make the nominations for the Academy Awards where no Nigerian film has competed before.
The screenplay is a masterpiece for Nollywood.
