AFRIFF is More than an Event
AFRIFF is More than an Event
A film festival is more than screenings of different films by filmmakers.
Film festivals are central to the development and advancement of the film industry.
The 9th annual African International Film Festival (AFRIFF) is in progress at the Landmark & Landmark Retail Boulevard on Victoria Island in Lagos, Africa's largest megacity.
I have been following the unique development of AFRIFF since the inaugural edition in 2010 before I wrote the popular report on "AFRIFF International Film Festival Brings Hollywood-Style Glitz and Glamour To Lagos" Dec 5, 2011 | Michael Chima Ekenyerengozi - Nigeriafilms.com.
AFRIFF under guidance of the Founder and CEO, the ebullient Ms. Chioma Ude has become the best organised international film festival in West Africa and among the best and biggest international film festivals in Africa after the annual Cairo International Film Festival of Egypt founded in 1976, Durban International Film Festival of South Africa founded in 1979 and the Festival International du Film de Marrakech of Morocco founded in 2001. Only Cairo International Film Festival has been accredited and given “A” status by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF).
AFRIFF has been organising Master class workshops, seminars, and scholarships for both professional filmmakers and film students.
It is so far so good for AFRIFF and going forward, Chioma Ude and her board should know that the time is due for an AFRIFF Film Institute like the Tribeca Film Institute that organises the Tribeca Film Festival and the Sundance Film Institute that organises the Sundance Film Festival. AFRIFF has the resources for a functional film institute.
