70th Anniversary of Cannes Film Festival: Alors, Où est Nollywood?

70th Anniversary of Cannes Film Festival:
Alors, Où est Nollywood?

Hollywood and Bollywood stars are on the red carpet at the 70th Anniversary of the annual #Cannes Film Festival closibg tomorrow, Sunday in France, but #Nollywood stars are still here in Nigeria, competing for who makes the front pages on #Nairaland, #BellaNaija and #LindaIkeji for their cheap publicity stunts and bragging rights on Instagram. Snapchat, Twitter and Facebook. Instead of going to Cannes and the Oscars, Queen of Nollywood, Mrs. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde goes to the Grammy Awards without even stepping on the red carpet.

A Tunisian woman is in official competition at the on going Cannes Film Festival, but no Nigerian filmmaker has ever qualified for official selection in the 70 years of Cannes when several filmmakers from other African countries have qualified and even won prizes, and yet we are bragging about being the second largest film industry in the world. We make too much noise without making sense in Nollywood.

Hollywood, Bollywood, Tollywood and other film industries are at the Cannes, but Nollywood is not there.
That says a lot about the shortcomings and failures of the Nigerian film industry.
