Global Film and TV Industry: Nigeria Not Included on USTR's Watch Lists

Global Film and TV Industry: Nigeria Not Included on USTR's Watch Lists

IIPA Recommends 19 Countries to USTR's Watch Lists

In February, the International Intellectual Property Alliance (IIPA), a coalition of five trade associations including IFTA, submitted its annual "Special 301" report to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). The report recommends that due to lack of sound copyright law and enforcement, limited market access for U.S. creators, and unfair competitive practices, the following countries be placed on USTR's Priority Watch List (Argentina, Chile, China, India, Mexico, Russia, Taiwan, Ukraine, and Vietnam) and Watch List (Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Indonesia, Peru, Switzerland, South Africa, Thailand, and United Arab Emirates).

Countries placed on this list are opened up to potential trade sanctions and tariffs. Illicit streaming devices (set-top boxes) and stream-ripping services were also cited as major challenges.

When Ekulo Dazzled @ Enugu International Trade Fair

When Ekulo Dazzled @ Enugu International Trade Fair

~ By Ingram Osigwe

It was festival-like and electrifying at the 29th Enugu International Trade Fair on Saturday, 24th March, 2018 when Nigeria’s leading household products manufacturing and commodity distribution conglomerate, the Ekulo Group, marked its Day and unveiled new brands. The brands are manufactured by a member of the Group, Evans Industries Limited.

Evidently awed by Ekulo’s patriotic zeal and determination to make Nigeria proud in the comity of nations through the production of classy brands of international standard, President of Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, ECCIMA, Sir Emeka Udeze who chaired the Day and unveiling, said the variety of top quality brands and products on display at the Ekulo pavilion was a clear testimony to the acceptability of the Group and its subsidiaries by a broad spectrum of consumers.

"Naked Beauty", the First Book of a Nollywood Screenplay

"Naked Beauty".
The first book of a #Nollywood screenplay to be published for commercial distribution coauthored by Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima, Publisher Editor of the NOLLYWOOD MIRROR®Series and Dr. Chika Christian Onu, PhD (Film Studies, University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria.)
Exclusively distributed by Lulu Books, USA.

It is important to publish a screenplay of the Nollywood genre for the pleasure of reading it and for film studies.

When I was researching for the production of a film on the beauty of the Niger Delta in the midst of the turmoil of horrifying conflicts in the region, I spent two years studying the sociocultural characteristics of the people on Bonny Island during the recce and I completed the story. Then I invited, Chika Christian Onu, one of the most accomplished leading pioneers of the phenomenon of Nollywood since he directed the second part of Living in Bondage, the first Nollywood blockbuster movie produced in 1992 and 1993. His colleague at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Lagos, Chris Obi-Rapu directed the first part of the two-part drama thriller written by Kenneth Nnebue and Okechukwu Ogunjiofor and produced by Okechukwu Ogunjiofor. Chika directed "Glamour Girls" in 1994, the second Nollywood blockbuster movie for the same Kenneth Nnebue. "Glamour Girls" is documented as the first English language movie in Nollywood.
Chika joined me as a cowriter of the screenplay for "Naked Beauty" which I published in 2006, because of the high literary value as an accomplished work of Nigerian literature in the format of a screenplay. But the production of the film has been delayed by circumstances beyond my control and I did not want to follow the guerrilla filmmaking style of typical Nollywood movies. I want the best global standards, because I want the film to be a masterpiece that will break new grounds for Nollywood in competition with the best films in the world. It must be good enough for the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival and make the nominations for the Academy Awards where no Nigerian film has competed before.
The screenplay is a masterpiece for Nollywood.

As of March 25, 2018, Black Panther has grossed US$630.9 million in the United States and Canada, and US$606.4 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of US$1.237 billion.

Nigerian Première of Akin Omotoso's "Colour of Wine" at iREPRESENT 2018

Nigerian Première of Akin Omotoso's "Colour of Wine" at the 2018 iREPRESENT International Documentary Film Festival

The Nigerian première of Akin Omotoso's "Colour of Wine" takes place Wednesday night at 8pm as a special prelude to the 2018 iREPRESENT International Documentary Film Festival opening tomorrow from March 22-25 at the Freedom Park on the Lagos Island of Africa's largest megacity.

About the documentary film:
In “The Colour of Wine,” a documentary directed by director Akin Omotoso, the viewer is shown the changing face of the South African wine industry. Following four young, black (and mostly women) winemakers, “The Colour of Wine” not only tells the story of South African winemaking as we currently know it but it also tells the story of how we got here.

Three of the featured winemakers, Ntsiki Biyela, Dumisani Mathonsi and Unathi Mantshongo, had no intentions of inclination that they would end up in the world of winemaking. One way or another, due to funding obstacles, all three found themselves offered scholarships and bursaries by different institutions to study aspects of winemaking and all three were among the first black students to study at Stellenbosch University.

The film shows all the spaces wine touches, from vineyards to wine cellars. Omotoso and the producers also expertly pull in wine experts and lovers to add to the flavour of the film.
