Activists convene in India after anti-LGBT ruling

Out & Equal partners with local NGOs to advance LGBT rights in India

BANGALORE, India, Jan. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, India's Supreme Court upheld its ruling to criminalize sexual activities "against the order of nature," including same-sex relationships. The decision occurs concurrently with talks being held by Selisse Berry, Founder & CEO of Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, in Bangalore to discuss workplace equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

The purpose of the cross-organizational meeting was to share best practices and create an action plan for next steps for safe and equitable workplaces. After the law passed, several LGBT employee resource groups were rumored to have closed. Some people who are openly LGBT at work shared that they are now feeling unsafe.

"Multinational companies with operations in India are scrambling to find a response that upholds their international values of nondiscrimination and inclusivity, while also being sensitive to the local legal situation. Out & Equal, which blends a deep understanding of the corporate mindset and a strong commitment to the long-term struggle for LGBT equality, is an invaluable voice at the table," said LGBT activist Minal Hajratwala.

"While marriage rights for same-sex couples are advancing in the U.S. and around the world, the basic human rights of LGBT people are in danger in many countries across Asia and Africa. In the past sixty days, same-sex relationships have become illegal in Nigeria and India, and persecution in Russia and Uganda has become a grave concern," said Selisse Berry. "We have a duty and a responsibility as a community to stand up when we see injustice. I know that the partnership between Out & Equal, our corporate partners and local NGOs will advance equality for LGBT people here in India."

Berry is also meeting with senior executives from major corporations operating in India to advocate for the ongoing support of LGBT employee resource groups and inclusive policies. The cross-organizational meeting was planned by a group of corporate executives participating in the Out & Equal Executive Forum, a multi-day conference convening LGBT executives to discuss issues facing the LGBT community in multi-national corporations.

Annika Álofti is a British actress and director, known for "Mist" (2012), "Art Ache and Two Very Long Days" (2014) and she is playing a significant role in "Invasion 1897", the historical epic film by Lancelot Imasuen to be premiered in over 30 countries after the World Premiere in April 2014 in Benin City of the great Benin Kingdom in Edo State, Nigeria.

"Invasion 1897" is the most anticipated film to celebrate the Nigeria Centenary in 2014 (modern day Nigeria came into being on January 1, 1914), and to mark the centenary of the death of the great King of Benin, Omo n’Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi in exile in Calabar on January 14, 1914, Lancelot Imasuen had a world press conference in his Lagos office and studios on January 14, 2014.

"Invasion 1897" (Nogbaisi Ovonramwen) is perhaps the most daring film project in the history of the Nigerian film industry, because no previous movie can be compared to it, both in scope and perspective of the historical context. The epic is based on the invasion of the Benin Kingdom by the British Empire in 1897 and looting the priceless ancient artifacts of the Benin kingdom, including the famous commemorative head and pendant of ivory mask representing Queen Idia (from court of Benin, 16th century) who was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. The commemorative head is at the British Museum, while the pendant is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. The film has an international cast of proven actors such as famous Caribbean born British Actor Rudolph Walker, OBE, Charles "Chucky" Venn, Annika á Lofti,Hannah Raehse-Felstead, Nollywood stars Segun Arinze, Charles Inojie, Nosa Ehimwen, Paul Obazele, Mike Omoreigbe who played the lead role as "Oba Ovoramwen" and the late Justus Esiri.
