"12 Years a Slave" Director Steve McQueen, And Actress Lupita Nyong'o To Be Honored At The Hollywood Film Awards

HOLLYWOOD, Calif., Sept. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Carlos de Abreu, founder and executive producer of the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards, announced today that Fox Searchlight's "12 Years a Slave" director, Steve McQueen will be honored with the "Hollywood Breakout Director Award," and actress Lupita Nyong'o will receive the "New Hollywood Award" for her great performance. The awards will be bestowed at the Hollywood Film Awards Gala Ceremony on Monday evening, October 21, 2013 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Steve McQueen is a British artist and filmmaker. In 2008, McQueen's critically acclaimed first feature HUNGER won the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival among countless other international prizes. He followed with 2011's incendiary film experience, SHAME, a provocative drama about addiction and secrecy in the modern world. The film received numerous accolades and awards with McQueen winning the CinemAvvenire Award and FIPRESCI Prize at the Venice Film Festival as well as nominations from BAFTA, the British Independent Film Awards, the London Film Festival, Evening Standard British Film Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards.

In 1996, McQueen was the recipient of an ICA Futures Award, in 1998 he won a DAAD artist's scholarship to Berlin and in 1999 - besides exhibiting at the ICA and at the Kunsthalle in Zürich - he also won the Turner Prize. McQueen has exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Documenta (2002 and 2007) and at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 where he represented Britain. His work is held in museum collections around the world including Tate, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Centre Pompidou.

In 2003, he was appointed Official War Artist for the Iraq war by the Imperial War Museum and subsequently produced the poignant and controversial project Queen and Country, which commemorated the deaths of British soldiers who died in the Iraq War by presenting their portraits as a sheet of stamps. In 2002, he was awarded the OBE and the CBE in 2011.

Born in London in 1969, McQueen lives and works in Amsterdam and London.

This winter, Lupita Nyong'o will co-star alongside Liam Neeson, Michelle Dockery and Julianne Moore in the thriller NON-STOP. This film is slated for a February 28, 2014 release by Universal Pictures.

The Kenyan actress is also a filmmaker, having served as the creator, director, editor, and producer of the award-winning feature-length documentary, IN MY GENES. The documentary follows eight individual Kenyans who have one thing in common: they were born with albinism, a genetic condition that causes a lack of pigmentation. In many parts of Africa, including Kenya, it is a condition that marginalizes, stigmatizes, and even endangers those who have it. Though highly visible in a society that is predominantly black, the reality of living with albinism is invisible to most. Through her intimate portraits, Nyong'o enables us see their challenges, humanity, and everyday triumphs.

A graduate of the Yale School of Drama's acting program, Nyong'o's stage credits include playing 'Perdita' in The Winter's Tale (Yale Repertory Theater), 'Sonya' in Uncle Vanya, 'Katherine' in The Taming of the Shrew, as well as being in the original production of Michael Mitnick's Elijah.

12 YEARS A SLAVE has won over audiences and critics alike at the Telluride and Toronto Film Festivals, as well as received the "People's Choice Audience Award" at Toronto this year. The film is based on an incredible true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender) as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. "Half of A Yellow Sun" is "Like Gone With the Wind" - Thandie Newton

Thandie Newton, the leading actress in the Nigerian civil war drama Half of a Yellow Sun has compared the film to Gone with the Wind, the 1939 epic historical film based on American civil war-era South.
The British actress also told Julie Miller in the interview published by Vanity Fair that her role as "Olanna" is the most sophisticated modern woman she has ever played so far.

Julie Miller: You’ve described Half of a Yellow Sun as being like Gone with the Wind set in Nigeria. Can you explain what you meant by that?

Thandie Newton: Well, this is all happening when the Biafran War [or the Nigerian Civil War] kicks off, and that was really run by the intellectuals and the academics, the world that Olanna has chosen to be in. And even when she has a chance to leave, to get on a flight that costs god knows how much, to join her wealthy parents to get out of there, she chooses not to because she is involved in this struggle that comes from the roots and the people. That’s why it is like Gone with the Wind. Because it is about the complete transformation of a person as well as a place.

After Receiving Feedback Through Social Media, Heineken Tests Consumers On Their Doorsteps

NEW YORK, Sept. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- After positive boasts online, imagine if someone showed up at your door asking you to spontaneously push a button to take a trip to an unknown destination. The Departure Roulette Roadshow follows the initial social experiment at JFK that aimed to reward spontaneity and capture the genuine moment of facing an instantaneous decision. Heineken followed and started conversations with people online who commented that they would press the red button on the old style flight clicker board if given the opportunity. Heineken arrived at the doorsteps of fans in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York, presenting them with the Departure Roulette challenge to push the button and immediately embark on a trip to an unknown place.

Miss Earth Nigeria 2013 Complete Photo Gallery



These are just five photos from the photo gallery of the 2013 Miss Earth Nigeria held on Sunday 22nd of September at the Oriental Hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos.
Model Marie Miller was the winner of the glamourous and prestigious beauty pageant which is one of the 149 national franchises of the Miss Earth pageant.






The event was hosted by the popular award winning actor and TV presenter Joseph Benjamin and the judges were African American actor Boris Kodjoe, American model and actress Amber Rose, American hip hop artiste Karly Redd, celebrated Nigerian photographer Kelechi Amadi-Obi and Nollywood diva Ini Edo.

Nollywood diva and President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria Ibinabo Fiberesima who is the founder and National Director of the pageant presented the new Miss Earth Nigeria her prize of a brand new 2013 Toyota Avensis and N3 million one year salary.
She will represent Nigeria at the World Miss Earth Pageant on December 7th in Pasay City, Philippines.

The celebrities at the event included popular comedians Julius Agwu and AY Makun, Nollywood stars Fred Amata, Charles Novia and Segun Arinze, award winning singer Timi Dakolo, Kas and Layole Oyatogun,

U.S Born Miss Philippines Wins 2013 Miss World Pageant in Indonesia



Miss Philippines Megan Young has been crowned Miss World 2013 on Saturday in Bali, Indonesia.

The pageant was held under tight security, because the global beauty pageant was threatened by fanatical Muslims who wanted to disrupt the event for violating the Islamic ethics of the world's most populous Muslim country. The radical Islam Defenders Front marched in public protests against holding the pageant in Indonesia and forced the organizers to move the event from a venue outside Jakarta to the predominantly Hindu Island of Nusa Dua in southern Bali.

The 23-year-old U.S.-born beauty queen studying digital film was overwhelmed with emotion as she accepted the crown from her predecessor, Wenxia Yu of China and promised to "be the best Miss World ever".

Marine Lorphelin, a 20-year-old medical student from France was the first runner-up and Miss Ghana Carranzar Naa Okailey Shooter, 23, also a medical student was the second runner-up.

Kunle Afolayan Breaks Down after the Wrap of October 1


Daring and accomplished young Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan was admitted for fatigue at a hospital in Lagos after he completed the shooting of his latest film "October 1st" last week. One of the members of his cast and crew said he is recovering fast and will soon release the official trailer of the historical film set in 1960, against the backdrop of Nigeria's independence on October 1st. The screenplay was written by Tunde Babalola, one of Nigeria's most accomplished screenwriters and winner of several notable awards including; 2004 Screen Nation Awards, (Critical Assignment), 2004 Hollywood Film Festival (Critical Assignment), 2003 Screen Nation Film & Television Award For Scriptwriting (Degsy) and the 1996 Channel 4 Sit-Com Festival (In Exile).


October 1st is a psychological thriller detailing the activities of a northern police detective, Dan Waziri who was posted to the western region to unravel the mystery behind a series of female murders in the community. He soon discovers that the prime suspect is Aderopo, the prince of the community. Waziri, however does not have plenty of time as he is expected to bring the Prince to book before the Nigerian flag is raised on October 1.


October 1st has a star studded cast including Sadiq Daba, Kanayo O. Kanayo, Kehinde Bankole, David Bailie, Kayode Olaiya, Nick Rhys, Fabian Lojede, Demola Adedoyin and Kunle Afolayan with celebrated Nigerian fashion designer Deola Sagoe playing a unique role as Lady Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, the famous activist mother of the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the legendary King of Afrobeat music.
