Milla Jovovich Opens ‘The Talent Store’ at Fidenza Village in Collaboration with Vogue Italia



LONDON, 30th May 2013, PRNewswire – The hotly anticipated ‘The Talent Store’ at Fidenza Village is back for the second year! Supermodel, actress and style icon Milla Jovovich hosted the launch of the innovative concept boutique on Monday 27 May together with Vogue Italia’s Editor-in-Chief, Franca Sozzani, and Value Retail’s Chief Executive, Desireé Bollier.

Now in its second year, ‘The Talent Store’ is an exclusive collaboration between Fidenza Village, one of the nine Chic Outlet Shopping® Villages in Europe by Value Retail, and Vogue Italia. It creates a platform for promising young international fashion designers to retail their collections from a dedicated pop-up boutique in the Village, less than an hour from Milan.

‘The Talent Store’ presents limited-edition pieces from 18 of Italy’s most coveted emerging designers selected by the ‘Vogue Talents’ programme, a Vogue Italia initiative by Editor-in-Chief Franca Sozzani.

Performance is a groundbreaking merger of stepping and classical music

WASHINGTON, May 31, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Symphony in Step will have its East Coast premiere at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., from June 5-9, 2013. The dramatic merger of stepping, a percussive dance form developed by African American college students, and classical music features Step Afrika!, a 15-piece symphony orchestra and the largely unknown history of George Bridgetower.

The two-act percussive dance performance has its origins in a 2011 cross-country collaboration with the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, but the D.C. series features new work that explores the history of Bridgetower, an Afro-Polish child prodigy and violin virtuoso who toured Europe in the early 1800s and eventually inspired Master composer Ludwig Van Beethoven to compose the famous Kreutzer Sonata.

The first act of Symphony in Step will feature music inspired by Bridgetower along with his teachers and composers, Franz Joseph Haydn and Beethoven, performed on piano, violin and drum and interpreted by Step Afrika!

The second act will feature a 15-piece chamber orchestra assembled especially for this project with professional musicians from across the D.C. area and graduate students from Catholic University's Classical Music program.

Anchorage Symphony Orchestra conductor Randall Fleischer and Step Afrika! Founder and Executive Director C. Brian Williams collaborated on the score with some original compositions developed by Fleisher while other music came from Step Afrika!'s existing repertoire. Step Afrika! Artistic Director Jakari Sherman responded with the choreography for Symphony in Step, a performance in which rhythmic footwork, body percussion and spoken word is entwined with jazz, gospel and classical masterpieces.

Founded in 1994, Step Afrika! is the first professional company in the world dedicated to the tradition of stepping. Today, Step Afrika! performs worldwide to promote an appreciation for stepping and the dance tradition's use as an educational tool for young people.  A market survey of major provision market in Lagos, revealed an increase in patronage of the brand by bathing soap consumers whose confidence in the product were re-enforced with a recent campaign by the brand owners, Evans Industries Limited. The company embarked on a vigorous campaign running on TV, radio, outdoor (including BRT buses) and social media aims at refreshing the brand image and further build consumer awareness around the brand while positioning it as ‘wholly Nigerian’ brand.

Evans industries has also in response to ever-changing tastes of consumers, added three new variants to Eva’s kitty (to make a total of six variants), offering something for every skin type. The six variants ; Eva Classic, Eva Gold, Eva Herbal, Eva Pearl, Eva Ivory and Eva Forever, analysts believe are opening up new windows of choices for new consumers of the product.

The Eva Classic which comes with Vitamin E extract promises the consumer a younger looking skin and helps it to heal faster; Eva Gold which comes with silk protein, moisturizes and conditions the skin; Eva Ivory comes with milk and honey extracts and nourishes the skin and helps maintain elasticity; Eva Herbal comes with Aloe Vera extracts and helps to reduce skin irritation while removing pimples.

"Happiness" on the Decline for Several American Population Subsets - Minorities, Recent Grads and Disabled



NEW YORK, May 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Has the pursuit of happiness left Americans unhappy? Maybe, according to the Harris Poll® Happiness index, which uses a series of questions to calculate Americans' overall happiness. According to findings of a Harris Poll survey of 2,345 U.S. adults surveyed online between April 10 and 15, 2013 by Harris Interactive, only a third of Americans (33%) are very happy. "Our happiness index offers insight into what's on the minds of Americans today and is a reflection of the state of affairs in our country," said Regina Corso, Senior Vice President of the Harris Poll. "While the attitudes on the economy may be improving, we're seeing that this is not translating into an improvement in overall happiness. For certain groups, such as minorities, recent graduates and the disabled, they are actually sub segments of the American population where 'happiness' has trended downward in the last couple years."

The Role of Politics
Minorities show particularly pronounced declines in happiness in the two years since the Happiness Index was last measured, with especially low happiness levels observed among the Hispanic American population; while it is important to note that a causal link cannot be established, it may not be a coincidence that this drop coincides with a political landscape that has seen frequent, sometimes contentious, discussion of immigration policy in recent months. Other findings include:

African-Americans appear to be less happy than in 2011, with 36% qualifying as very happy – down from 44% in 2011. However, though happiness is down among them, they remain roughly as happy as whites (34%); in contrast, fewer than three in ten Hispanic Americans (28%) are very happy. This represents not only a decline from 2011 (35%) but also a significantly lower percentage than seen among either whites or African-Americans.
Among Americans with disabilities, the percentage of those very happy has dropped from 34% to 31%- another decline which may have ties to cuts or feared cuts in services as a result of the sequester.

A Tough Job Market
While a smaller percentage of Americans agree that their work is frustrating than two years ago (34%, vs. 39% in 2011), this may be a reflection less of higher worker satisfaction and more of a tough job market, with Americans realizing that in this economy, having a job is a good thing.

College graduates' likelihood to qualify as very happy has dropped since 2011 (from 35% to 32%), a possible casualty of a challenged job market and increasing questions of whether a college degree in this day and age is returning on the time and monetary investment.

Americans earning under $50,000 per year are also less likely to qualify as very happy than in 2011 (from 33% to 29% among those earning <$35,000; from 35% to 32% among those earning between $35,000-$49,999), which may be a response to anything from the struggling economy to a variety of cuts – or even feared cuts – in services as a result of the sequester. Looking at comparisons in happiness levels among Americans right now:

Those 50 and older (36% ages 50-64, 41% ages 65+) are more likely to be very happy than their younger counterparts (31% ages 18-24, 30% ages 25-29, 28% ages 30-39, 30% ages 40-49).

Whites (34%) and African-Americans (36%) are both, as mentioned earlier, happier than Hispanic Americans (28%).

Women (35%) are happier than men (32%).
Political independents (32%) are significantly less likely to qualify as very happy than members of either the Democratic or Republican parties (35% each).

Turning to specific statements tested as part of the index, smaller percentages of Americans are displaying agreement that they are optimistic about the future (from 75% in 2011 to 67% in 2013), while a greater percentage than in 2011 agree that they won't get much benefit from the things that they do anytime soon (38%-42%).

The Harris Happiness Index is calculated by asking Americans if they agree or disagree with a list of statements, some positive and others negative. Those who say they strongly agree with all of the positive statements, such as "my relationships with friends bring me happiness", "I rarely worry about my health" and "at this time, I'm generally happy with my life", and strongly disagree with all of the negative ones, such as "I frequently worry about my financial situation" and "I rarely engage in hobbies and pastimes I enjoy," are considered very happy.

Methodology
This Harris Poll was conducted online within the United States between April 10 and 15, 2013 among 2,345 adults (aged 18 and over). Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Where appropriate, these data were also weighted to reflect the composition of the adult online population. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents' propensity to be online.

All sample surveys and polls, whether or not they use probability sampling, are subject to multiple sources of error which are most often not possible to quantify or estimate, including sampling error, coverage error, error associated with nonresponse, error associated with question wording and response options, and post-survey weighting and adjustments. Therefore, Harris Interactive avoids the words "margin of error" as they are misleading. All that can be calculated are different possible sampling errors with different probabilities for pure, unweighted, random samples with 100% response rates. These are only theoretical because no published polls come close to this ideal.

Respondents for this survey were selected from among those who have agreed to participate in Harris Interactive surveys. The data have been weighted to reflect the composition of the adult population. Because the sample is based on those who agreed to participate in the Harris Interactive panel, no estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

Stepping Stones to Success

"Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples … [and] as he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?'"1

Many achievements in life have come from a setback, an accident, or some kind of crisis or even suffering. For instance, the first cars had to be started by cranking the motor by hand. At times the engine would "kick" back the crank handle. This happened to Charles Kettering and it broke his arm.

"There must be a safer way to start cars than this," Kettering reasoned and he went on to invent self-starters for cars.

Jacob Schick was prospecting for gold where the temperature fell to 40 degrees below zero. He had a hard time trying to shave with a blade without sufficient hot water—so he invented the first electric shaver.

Eugene O'Neill had no specific goal or aim in life until he became ill and had to go to hospital. While lying flat on his back he began to write his plays.

A number of years ago I had an accident on a construction site which put me in hospital for a week. For a few years I had been battling a sense of God's call to Christian service but never acted on it until I was flat on my back with time to think. It was there in the hospital that I said, "Okay, God, you win. I know what you want me to do." That was the day I made the decision to go back to college to train for Christian ministry.

So, when things go wrong in your life and you experience a major setback, lose your job, or have an accident, not always, but perhaps God has something for you to learn, or something else he wants you to do. The important thing is to be open to what God is saying.

True, disasters happen because we live in a broken, sinful world. Sometimes, however, a disaster is "God's wake-up call" to teach us an important lesson, to help us grow, or to lead us in a different direction.

Most of us are not going to be struck down like Saul [Paul] was and hear a voice from heaven, and be left blind for three days when God calls. Some of us, though, who are hard-headed have to be "hit over the head" as it were with a "four-by-four" for God to get our attention. But for most of us God leads through his Word, our circumstances, and through a "still small voice" within that gives us a sense of what God wants us to do.

"Dear God, help me to see/hear/learn what you are saying to me in every adverse circumstance I may experience, as I truly want to be what you want me to be and to do what you want me to do. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus' name, amen."

Screen Outdoor Open Air Cinema Presents The Screen Naija One Village, One Cinema



Screen Outdoor Open Air Cinema with the cooperation and support of the Bank of Industry, Projection Foundation, Goethe Institut, DVWORX Studios, Nigerians Report, Eko International Film Festival and other partners is launching the Screen Naija One Village, One Cinema Project at the popular Freedom Park Lagos on Saturday June 22, 2013.

The event is open to the public from 4 pm - 9 pm and it is free.

Expected at the event are over 500 people; including the new brand ambassador of the Bank of Industry Afro hip hop super star Dapo Daniel Oyebanjo, popularly known as D'banj, Nollywood stars, movie buffs, entertainment celebrities and major stakeholders in the Nigerian film industry.

Nigerian Professor's First Novel Wins Commonwealth Book Prize for Africa

Dr. Sule E. Egya writing under the pen name of "E.E. Sule" is among the regional winners of the 2013 Commonwealth Book Prize for his first novel Sterile Sky.

The coming of age story of the gifted young Murtala who had to confront the horrors of the violent riots and the woes of his family in Kano.
Stalked by monsters real and imagined, desperate to preserve a sense of self and the future, Murtala hunts for answers in the wreckage of the city – and gives us a unique insight into modern life in northern Nigeria.

Sule is an Associate Professor in Department of English at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Nigeria. Besides published academic work and essays, Dr.Egya is the author of the short story collections Impotent Heavens and Dream and Shame, and the poetry volumes Naked Sun, Knifing Tongues and What the Sea Told Me. His poems, short stories, and critical work have appeared in numerous journals, anthologies and literary magazines. Sterile Sky is his first novel.

The Commonwealth Foundation has announced the regional winners for the 2013 Commonwealth Book Prize and Commonwealth Short Story Prize. Representing Africa, Asia, Canada and Europe, Caribbean, and the Pacific regions, these writers will now
compete to become the overall winner, to be announced at Hay Festival UK on 31 May.

The Commonwealth Book Prize is awarded for the best first novel, and the Commonwealth Short Story Prize for the best piece of unpublished short fiction.

Part of Commonwealth Writers, the prizes unearth, develop and promote the best of new writing from across the Commonwealth, developing literary connections worldwide and consistently bringing less-heard voices to the fore. The cultural breadth of stories from this year’s regional winners includes Sri Lanka on the eve of independence from
British Colonial rule, the Socialist regime of 1970s Jamaica, and a South Africa riven by apartheid.
