The Mayans Aren't the Only Ones to Get It Wrong - Worst 'End of World' Predictions... and the Embarrassing Excuses

Last week the world has seen yet another failed doomsday prediction, but far from this being the preserve of either the Mayans or modern day "preppers", established religions and even esteemed scientists have also had their fair share of failed predictions. However, now we are left wondering what the next big end of world prediction will be.

Numerous, by Kelly Rogers, out now on Amazon Kindle, is a thriller written around the Papal Prophecy, by Ireland's first ever saint, Archbishop Malachy, who correctly predicted each and every pope until the very last, as well as his own death. The 900-year-old manuscript still lies in the Vatican archives.

Modern-day readers may believe that this book has no relevance to our lives today, but think again. St Malachy's prophecy predicts that the final pope will usher forth "The End. When the terrible judge will judge his people." We currently see the penultimate pope, Joesph Ratzinger, in the Vatican and exactly what "The End" will be we can only guess at... But we're sure this is going to be the next big thing in doomsday predictions!

The Modern Day Doomsdayer

Californian preacher Harold Camping took a very public climb-down in May 2011 when his end-of-the-world prediction failed to materialise, after a nationwide billboard and radio advert campaign. This was not Camping's first failed foray into the world of divination; he inaccurately predicted the world would end on the 6th September 1994 and consequently some followers gave up homes, savings and jobs. When the end failed to occur he revised the date to September 29 and then again to October 2.

He said, "I don't have any responsibility. I'm only teaching the Bible. I don't have spiritual rule over anybody… except my wife." We imagine everyone, including his long-suffering wife, will take any further predictions with a liberal pinch of salt.

2000 reasons to not believe

Many luminaries over the centuries predicted 2000 and the end of time, including: Blavatsky, founder of Theosophy; Edgar Cayce, world famous US psychic and healer; Sun Myung Moon, founder of the Unification Church; and even the esteemed and revered Sir Isaac Newton.

This also has to be the least original prophecy in history. At the turn of the first millennium many people expected Christ to return and 'the end' to arrive with him. Our prediction: expect more of the same for the year 3000.

The TV Evangelist turned would-be US president

Ex-Baptist minister and US TV evangelist Pat Robertson said that "God told him the end was coming", but to avoid catastrophe we all needed to "pray real hard". We can only assume that the world did just that as no cataclysm arrived.

Robertson's power of prophecy has also evaded him in his own life; evidently not seeing his total defeat as a Republican presidential candidate in 1988.

False Witness

We all know how tenacious Jehovah Witnesses can be when it comes to door knocking and it seems that they're equally as dogged when it comes to doomsday predictions. They first predicted Armageddon in 1914, when disaster failed to appear they revised their prophecy to 1915, 1918, 1920, 1925, 1941, 1975 and 1994.

No Method in the Madness

Charles Wesley, one of the founders of the Methodist church, predicted the end in 1794, as did the Shakers. Despite his obvious error Charles' brother, John, joined in and predicted that 1836 would be the year of the Great Beast and would herald the beginning of the end.

However, Charles Wesley clearly had his shaky convictions; he begged to be buried in an Anglican not Methodist grave just before his death.

The Millerites were never right

William Miller (founder of the Millerites, now the Seventh Day Adventists) predicted the end would come between March 21, 1843 and March 21, 1844. The dates came and went with nothing occurring so the date was revised to April 18th. Again nothing happened and the date was changed to October 22, 1844. Miller continued to wait for the end until his death in 1849, which certainly was the end for him. However, the modern-day church that Miller founded continues to claim to this day that the date was correct, but as it was an event that occurred in Heaven it went entirely unnoticed by us on the Earthly plane.

The Jupiter Effect

The Jupiter Effect was written in 1974 by two astrophysicists, John Gribben and Stephen Plagemann. Predicted for 10th March 1982 when all nine planets would align and create a gravitational pull that would cause a "huge increase in sunspots, solar, flares, and/or earthquakes". Gribben later claimed it never was a prophecy but a theoretical "what if?" However, people did believe that it was actually going to happen, the credentials of the theorists adding weight to the calculations. And indeed an effect was measured on Earth - a 0.04 millimetre high tide!

Cult Following


Amateur astronomer Chuck Shramek observed a companion object following the Hale-Bopp comet and called a radio show to report his findings. This led to several end-of-the-world theories which spread across the world via the Internet. Many prophecies merely bring about a little embarrassment, but this one truly did herald disaster in the form of The Heaven's Gate cult, who took it as their signal to commit mass suicide in March 1997.

Al Porta's Planetary Portal

Respected meteorologist Albert Porta predicted that on December 17, 1919 the conjunction of six planets would "cause great explosions of flaming gas and eventually engulf the Earth." This prediction led to mob violence and suicides. It proved cataclysmic for Albert; he lost his job as a respected meteorologist and ended up as weatherman on a local paper.

There is a glaring difference between Nigerian girls and women in Nigeria and Nigerian girls and women in developed countries, because those in developed countries are more advanced than those in Nigeria in information, education and communication (IEC) and standards of living. And the appalling poor quality of education in Nigeria is worsening the intellectual development of Nigerians in Nigeria.

Communicating with Nigerians who even boast of being graduates of Nigerian universities is a nightmare when addressing intellectual and political matters of local and global significance. For instance, majority of Nigerian girls in Nigeria who claim to be educated and informed with their latest gadgets and toys of BBM and other trendy mobile devices were clueless about the popular discussions on Chinua Achebe’s controversial memoir There Was A Country and how the issues raised matter in the history of Nigeria. Majority of these BlackBerry babes don’t even read newspapers, except gossip tabloids online and offline on celebrities and their lifestyles and scandals. In fact, even the so called trendy ones who are often seen posing and posturing on the red carpets in Nigeria and claiming to wear the top designers clothes, shoes and other accessories don’t even know the difference between Spring and Fall collections of the designers they drop their names in their fake impressions of Hollywood celebrities they see on cable TV and on the internet.

Having a healthy cerebral conversation with anyone of them is almost impossible and among them are graduates of top Nigerian universities and you can be really flummoxed by their vacuity. So, what do you do with these milling hordes of intellectually retarded Nigerian babes on the street and on the internet whose best contributions to Facebook is posting their useless photographs to solicit for the attention of their romantic interests and targets?
The best thing to do in most cases is to skip all intellectual matters on serious literary and sociopolitical issues and indulge in their trivialities and play along to dine and wine and fork them as they wish and when they have nothing more to offer than their junk life, just dump them when you are bored and tired of them and move on to those you can really have a more fulfilling relationship with, because with these intellectually retarded Nigerian girls and women, you can never be at par with your intellectual peers in the developed countries. They are just too intellectually backward to comprehend the trending contemporary issues and how they will determine our future on earth. That is why majority of them have been caught napping by the notable paradigms in both pop culture and political developments in the world.

How many of them knew about the Orange Revolution in Eastern Europe or how climate change is also worsening the volatile political crisis in the north that has done collateral damage to peace and stability in Nigeria and affects the welfare of everyone in Nigeria? What they all shout is Boko Haram! But how many of them can sit down with you and discuss the direct or indirect relationship between the Islamic terrorism in northern Nigeria and the spread of the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM)? But now the horrifying and terrifying acts of the Boko Haram have disrupted the formal and normal life of many of them who would have been doing their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), working and dating in the northern and Middle Belt states?
Majority of them who have fled the conflict zones have chosen defeatist and escapist ways of life instead of addressing the present realities in Nigeria.

They have ignorant and nonchalant attitudes and they have only made themselves more insecure in sociopolitical emergencies. And they still want to be counted among the future leaders of this country when they are so clueless about the local and global indicators of political developments in the 21st century?

When a community loses the appreciation of intellectual values it will gradually and eventually lose its humanity and will degenerate into a state of bestiality and incivility and that was exactly what happened in the horrifying murder of four students of the University of Port Harcourt in Umuokiri village, Aluu, Rivers State on October 5, 2012, and other tragic cases of barbaric acts in different parts of Nigeria.

To be well informed on the realities affecting our life in the present circumstances is a must in every relationship, courtship and marriage so that you will not be overwhelmed by the crisis as witnesses in the tragic case of Rwanda where their ignorance and nonchalance worsened the management of the crisis until it became one of the worst human catastrophes in history. Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost and the relationships of the survivors were altered forever.

The terrible economic and sociopolitical realities in Nigeria are affecting lives and relationships and the results are mass unemployment with millions of jobless singles who cannot even afford three square meals to think of having and maintaining relationships and those who have ended up with unplanned marriages and families are having children they cannot even give good parenting. Therefore in every relationship in Nigeria, you must address the present realities of life before marriage. I wonder how many singles are enjoying normal relationships and getting married in the Boko Haram zones of northern Nigeria? What of those who have been attacked and lost their lovers and spouses?

This is Washington's eighth appearance in the Quigley Poll, and his first win. The Quigley Poll, conducted each year since 1932, is an annual survey of motion picture theatre owners and film buyers, which asks them to vote for the ten stars that they believe generated the most box-office revenue for their theatres during the year. It has been long regarded as one of the most reliable indicators of a Star's real box-office draw because the selections are made by professionals whose livelihood depends on choosing the films and actors that will bring audiences to their theatres. It draws a distinction among stars that happen to appear in hit films and those stars that Exhibitors and film buyers believe actually cause an audience to come to their theatres. Johnny Depp was in "Dark Shadows" and had an uncredited role in "21 Jump Street," but still managed a fifth this year. He has been in the Top Ten eight times, with wins in 2010, 2007 and 2006.

Daniel Craig made his second showing in the Top Ten in sixth place with "Skyfall" and Daniel Day-Lewis, playing "Lincoln," had his debut in seventh place. Last year's winner, Brad Pitt, made it seven years in the Poll and was voted into the eighth spot. Leonardo DiCaprio was ninth with a performance in "Django Unchained" and has been in the Quigley Poll eight times. Robert Downey, Jr. came in tenth with his performance in "The Avengers."

Tom Cruise has not placed in the Poll since 2007, but has been in the Top Ten 20 times since 1983, and been voted number one - the most of any actor - seven times. Tom Hanks, Clint Eastwood, Burt Reynolds and Bing Crosby have all won five times. Clint Eastwood has been in the poll 21 times starting in 1968. Currently, Exhibitors appreciate him more as a Director that brings audiences to their theatres. John Wayne, Doris Day and Shirley Temple each finished first four times, but John Wayne was voted one of the Top Ten Money-Making Stars an astounding 25 times from 1949 to 1974.

Exhibitors were also asked to name the Stars of Tomorrow for 2012: one male and one female who they feel will be Top Money-Makers in the years to come. The 2012 winners are Joseph Gordon-Levitt who was in "The Dark Knight Rises," "Looper," "Lincoln" and "Premium Rush" and Jennifer Lawrence who had breakthrough performances in "The Hunger Games" and "Silver Linings Playbook" and starred in "House at the End of the Street."
